WOMEN'S RUGBY

Sep 8, 2007

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich women's rugby team opened its season by shutting out Vermont Law School, 59-0. Twenty-nine ‘Wick' players took the field in the non-league match while a multitude of fans, alumni, former players and supporters cheered them on.

Scoring started early when junior transfer Ashley de Grasse (Colchester, Vt.) finalized a team effort produced by the Norwich backline. De Grasse, who started her first match for Norwich and her first match at the wing position, went on to contribute two more tries in the first 20 minutes of the match.

Also contributing first half tries were junior center, Ashley Lally (Sparta, N.J.), and senior fullback, Sybil Taunton (Brentwood, Calif.) with two tries apiece. Senior prop, Coral Lore (Orlando, Fla.), and senior eight-man, Berline Marcelin (Miami, Fla.) each converted one try apiece.

An additional two tries were converted by sophomore center, Clarissa Wynn (New London, Conn.).

The second half saw 11 players enter their inaugural match. Building on a 49-0 half time lead, senior lock, Tamara Evans (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), and senior flanker, Charmaine Morris (Detroit, Mich.), added additional scores to finalize the match at 59-0.

"We had a great time hosting Vermont Law," said NU captain Cassie Thompson (Blackstone, Mass.). "We wish them the best this season. Despite the score, they never gave in, and they pressed us right to the final whistle."

"We looked good for the opening match," said NU head coach Austin Hall. "I'm happy to see our pride and passion for the game is as powerful as ever. We worked hard around the field and our back play was excellent for opening day. We had many changes and newcomers in the forward pack and their work ethic was outstanding. With 29 players on the field over the course of the game, we've got our work cut out for us as we decide which players will earn a starting nod next weekend. It's a long season and we're committed to improving every day and with each match."

The women's rugby squad travels to Epping, N.H., on Sept. 15-16 for the Beantown Tournament, prior to opening up league play Sept. 22 at Amherst College.
