Women's Rugby: Norwich Beats Wayne State (Neb.), 15-12, In Consolation Match

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Norwich University women's rugby team defeated Wayne State (Neb.), 15-12, in a consolation match Sunday. With the victory, the Cadets place fifth in the nation.
This marked the final match in Maroon for five Norwich seniors -- Cassie Thompson, Berline Marcelin, Sybil Taunton, Coral Lore and Yuliya Omarov.
Taunton opened the scoring with a blast around the defense. Wing Ashley de Grasse then added two more, both in the first half, to give Norwich 15 points.
The second half was more of a back-and-forth battle as Wayne State began to use its might in the forward pack to slowly and surely drive down the field. They scored two tries, included one converted try, to earn their 12 points.
The victory marks a milestone in the careers of four-year starter Cassie Thompson and head coach Austin Hall as they both earned their 50th win.
"I'm so happy to see Cassie go out on top and earn that 50th victory," said NU Coach Austin Hall. "It was evident from the beginning of the match that the seniors were not losing this one. The underclassmen came up big and helped the seniors enjoy their final game for Norwich. We have so much gratitude for the support of parents, administrators and training staff who made this weekend special for all of us."
With the season finished, a number of Norwich players will be asked to play in the New England All-Star games this coming weekend.
