Women's Rugby: Cadets Fall To Big Green 17-12

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's rugby team dropped a 17-12 decision to Dartmouth in the Cadets' final non-league match. In what turned out to be a hot day with excellent playing conditions, the Cadets scored first, but were unable to maintain pressure throughout the match.

Senior fullback Ashley de Grasse opened the scoring when she was illegally tackled near the try zone.  She was awarded a penalty try and junior flyhalf Clarissa Wynn successfully converted it.

The next two tries belonged to Dartmouth, and the Big Green took a 12-7 lead into halftime.

Norwich (1-4) opened the second half with some mechanical play, and the Cadets worked their way towards the try zone.  Sophomore scrumhalf Maria Lorentzon capped a great drive with an equalizing try.

Dartmouth regained its lead with 20 minutes to play, and Norwich was unable to score the equalizer.

Senior captain and flanker Angela Lakey, who is back to her 7 spot after a short stint at flyhalf, had a gifted performance in the defeat.  Her game-breaking runs and dominance at the lineout were inspiring to the younger players.

"Both Dartmouth and Norwich have long traditions of high level rugby," said NU head coach Austin Hall. "While Dartmouth leads the series between the two sides, we are at a point where we can compete with them. I think we're all happy to see the non-league season come to an end. We're a young team and we took some hard knocks the last few weeks - we're ready for a fresh start as we enter league play this coming weekend."

The Cadets will open their conference schedule when they host WPI on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m.
