Women’s Rugby: Cadets Claim 2009 Northeast Championship

NORHFIELD, Vt. - A beautiful Vermont Sunday saw the Norwich University women's rugby team place the capstone on an outstanding fall season with a 42-3 victory over the Rutgers. With the win, the Cadets claim their third Northeast Championship in four years and finish the league and playoff fall season with an undefeated 11-0 record.

It took less than a minute for junior wing Unna Lee to race in for the first try of the match. Ten minutes later, junior wing Alicia Seda pounded her way in for her first of four tries on the day. Seda's tries give her a team-leading 19 on the season, 10 of which came in the last three playoff games.

Norwich captain and center Clarissa Wynn scored a try midway through the first half to give her 15 on the season. Combined with one successful conversion today, Wynn moves into first place on the all-time Norwich scoring list with 282 career points. Wynn was also selected as the 2009 Northeast Championships MVP.

Additional tries were scored by sophomore flyhalf Katie Gingras and sophomore prop Caroline Bell. For both players, it was their second try of the fall season.

"A truly unbelievable experience to work with these players," said NU head coach Austin Hall. "I am so fortunate to be a part of this opportunity as these players give everything they have to the success of the team. They are outstanding rugby players, but their smiles and their positive energy are really what set them apart. Many thanks to all our friends at Norwich University, our alumnae and our parents for their generous support this season. Congratulations to all of you!"

The victory will advance the Cadets to the USA Rugby National Championships in April. They will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the nation.
