Womens Rugby: Cadets Dominate Engineers, 96-0
WORCESTER, Mass. - With four Cadets earning their first career tries, and a hat-trick performance from sophomore center Adria Pickin, the Norwich University women's rugby team rolled to a 96-0 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute Saturday in league play.
Earning their first scores in a Maroon & Gold jersey were freshman flanker Chelsea Weeden, sophomore hooker Janet Roswell, sophomore flyhalf Katie Gingras and sophomore scrumhalf Amanda Granillo.
Pickin led all try scorers with three tries, while sophomore flanker Hannah Bushey, junior wing Elise Fournier and sophomore wing Jess Rosado each notched a pair. Single tries were scored by sophomore center Katie Hathaway, senior lock Kelly Allenspach and junior fullback Unna Lee.
Fournier led all point scorers with a 22-point performance, successfully kicking 6-of-8 conversions to add to her two tries. Gingras added a conversion kick, as did sophomore Caroline Bell, a usual prop who played flyhalf for a portion of the match.
"It was nice to see us string some well-executed team tries together," said NU head coach Austin Hall. "In a game like this, we could have turned sloppy and started trying to do too much as individuals. Instead, we kept our focus on team and phase play and put many hands on the ball before our scores. It was a fun game against a spirited side and we are greatly anticipating the tough schedule ahead."
The Cadets return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, against league rival Vermont. Both teams are 4-0 in league play and the winner will claim the western conference championship and the No. 2 seed in the New England Rugby playoffs.
