Women's Soccer: Emmanuel Edges Norwich In Overtime, 3-2, To Reach GNAC Title Game

Oct 30, 2007

BOSTON - Katie Magnus and Allyson Allen tallied goals, but it was not enough as the Norwich women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to top-seeded Emmanuel in the GNAC semifinals Tuesday afternoon.

The Cadets, who will now wait and see if they qualify for a spot in the upcoming ECAC Tournament, fall to 13-5-1 on the season.

Norwich led 2-1 with just under 20 minutes to play when a questionable penalty kick was whistled against the Cadets, opening the door for Emmanuel. The Saints converted on the ensuing penalty kick and stole the momentum.

Emmanuel secured the overtime triumph with a goal in the 97th minute. The Saints defeated the Cadets in overtime, 4-3 in the regular season when they also overcame a one-goal second half deficit.

Norwich, seeded fourth in the conference tournament, jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Magnus scored off an assist from Dawn McNulty. Emmanuel tied the score 20 minutes later, but NU took a 2-1 lead with just over 12 minutes to play in the stanza on the strength of Allyson Allen's unassisted goal.

The Cadets had two golden opportunities to extend their lead later in the half, but a pair of breakaways were turned away and they had to settle for a 2-1 advantage at the intermission.

Norwich outplayed Emmanuel for much of the match, but could not get the bounces. NU head coach Tyler Renaud was pleased with how his team played.

"We put forth outstanding effort throughout today's match," said Renaud. "The girls deserved to win this game.

"Overall, it was a very good season for our team," added Renaud. "Now, we'll sit back and hope for an ECAC bid."
