Norwich Stops Simmons In Overtime, 2-1
NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Caitlin Wohlschlegel scored in the 95th minute to propel the Norwich women's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 overtime defeat of Simmons in GNAC action Saturday afternoon at Howard Field. Having won seven consecutive games, the Cadets improve to 8-2-0, 6-0-0 GNAC. The Sharks, meanwhile, dip to 3-7-1, 2-3-1 GNAC.
Wohlschlegel corralled Nikki Szczepanski's corner kick and drilled the ball into the back of the net to give the Cadets the thrilling overtime win.
For a while, it did not look like the game would go into overtime, as NU led 1-0 throughout almost the entire game. But Simmons fought hard, and eventually knotted the score at 1-1 in the 85th minute to send the game into the extra session.
Dawn McNulty gave NU an early 1-0 lead, scoring on a header off of an assist from Szczepanski at the 3:58 mark.
Alecia Wright made three saves in the first half and Nicki Hunsicker made four stops after halftime.
Norwich outshot Simmons 27-14, and the Cadets held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Norwich women's soccer team takes to the road for its next match, travelling to Boston, Mass., to battle GNAC foe Emmanuel on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m.
