Clarkson Edges Norwich, 2-1
CASTLETON, Vt. - Karissa Doyon fired four shots and scored Norwich's lone goal, but the Cadets' women's soccer team came up just short, falling 2-1 at Castleton State Wednesday afternoon. Norwich's record dips to 1-2-0 on the season, while Castleton State improves to 1-1-0.
Castleton State got on the board first as Erin Hanlon broke a scoreless tie at 38:15 off an assist from Meryssa Wacholder.
The Spartans, who took their 1-0 lead into halftime, had several additional scoring chances thwarted by Cadet goalkeeper Nicki Hunsicker. Hunsicker ended the day with four saves, none more spectacular than the one coming 15 minutes into the second half when she turned away a Tracy Stala chip shot from eight yards out.
Norwich evened the score with just over 11 minutes to play when freshman Karissa Doyon chipped in a beautiful shot from the end line that curved just out of the reach of goalie Micole Bellimer's hands.
Unfortunately for the Cadets, an ‘own goal' did them in just 10 seconds later after a ball was misplayed inside the six-yard box.
Norwich pressed the Spartan backfield over the final 10 minutes, but could not score the equalizer.
The Cadets held a 12-8 edge in shots for the game.
The Norwich women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 8, when the Cadets open up its conference slate by hosting Rivier at Howard Field as part of Homecoming Weekend. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
