NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Seniors Ashley Carvalho (Pinellas Park, Fla.) and Mehgan McMullen (Northfield, Vt.) each scored a goal to lead the Norwich University women's soccer team to its first victory of the season in a 2-1 win over Rivier University on Saturday night.
McMullen scored an unassisted tally in the 31st minute, while Carvalho scored in the 63rd minute to lead the Cadets' offense in their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener.
Norwich (1-2, 1-0 GNAC) improved to 18-4-1 all-time against Rivier University and avenged a 2-0 loss in Nashua, N.H. last season to the Raiders.
McMullen ran down a long through ball from the back line, cut around a Rivier defender back towards the center of the field, drew the Raiders' goalkeeper off her line and then fired a shot around her into the left corner of the net.
The Cadets made it a two-goal advantage in the 63rd minute with Carvalho scoring on a beautifully placed free kick into the top left corner of the net from 25 yards out to beat the Rivier goalkeeper.
Rivier responded just over a minute later with Ashley Glynn scoring on a penalty kick after Norwich was whistled for a hand ball in the box. Glynn calmly tucked the ball into the bottom left corner of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Freshman Katie Bishop-Manning (New York, N.Y.) made one save to pick up her first collegiate victory for the Cadets. Kasey Smith made nine saves for Rivier in the loss.
Norwich outshot Rivier 21-8 for the game.
Norwich will hit the road for three straight GNAC matches, starting with Johnson & Wales on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. The Cadets will return home on Saturday, Sept. 23 when they host Emmanuel at 6:30 p.m. on NU Homecoming Weekend 2017.
