Women’s Soccer: Norwich soars past Newbury, 8-0

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's soccer team scored early and often in an 8-0 non-conference victory over Newbury College on Tuesday night at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium. 

Freshman Sydney Rocheville (Salem, Mass.) scored two goals and tallied an assist for a five-point night to lead the offense. Norwich had seven different goal scorers on the day with freshmen Zorya Webster (Corning, N.Y.) and Regan Covey (Thetford, Vt.) each scoring their first collegiate goals. 

The Cadets (2-8-0, 1-6-0 GNAC) opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the game with Kyra Schoenfeld (Hadley, Mass.) her second goal of the year on an unassisted goal. Schoenfeld buried a shot into the corner of the net from the top of the 18 to make it 1-0 Norwich. 

Rocheville stretched the lead to 2-0 at the 11:43 mark with Ashley Carvalho (Pinellas Park, Fla.) picking up the assist on a corner-kick service from the right. The ball deflected off Rocheville's body and into the back of the net for her second goal of the season and first of the night. 

The Cadets increased the lead to 3-0 just under three minutes later with sophomore Madison Oelker (West Liberty, Ohio) scoring on a loose ball off a scrum in the box. Carvalho picked up the assist by sending a free kick in. Rocheville was first to the ball and had a shot deflected before Oelker buried it for her second of the season. 

Carvalho extended the lead to 4-0 in the 17th minute with Carvalho scoring off an assist from Kate Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.). Carvalho banked a shot off the right post from the top of the 18 for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. 

Rocheville scored her second of the night in the 54th minute with Oelker picking up the assist in the 54th minute. Oelker notched the assist with a pass over from the right and Rocheville buried the ball for her third goal of the season. 

Webster tallied her first collegiate goal in the 59th minute, sprinting behind the Newbury defense, making a move to the right around the keeper and burying the ball into the back of the net. 

Covey scored her first collegiate goal in the 66th minute by beating the Newbury keeper into the top left corner of the net off an over the top pass from Jordan Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.). 

The Cadets capped the scoring in the 80th minute with junior Danielle Johnson (Groton, Mass.) scoring on a penalty kick for her first goal of the season. 

Norwich outshot Newbury 34-4 for the game. Freshman Katie Bishop-Manning (New York, N.Y.) made one save to pick up her second win of the season. Sophomore Miranda Lloyd (Mesquite, Texas) came on for the final 10 minutes of the game to preserve the shutout.
