NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's soccer team closed the 2017 season on a high note, downing Lyndon State 2-0 on a rainy Tuesday evening in non-conference action on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Senior Mehgan McMullen (Northfield, Vt.) and freshman Sydney Rocheville (Salem, Mass.) each scored goals to lead the Cadets' offense in the victory as NU beat Lyndon State in the final game of each team's season for the second straight year.
Rocheville gave Norwich (3-12-0, 1-10 GNAC) a lead it would never relinquish in the 32nd minute with a goal from 25 yards out that beat Lyndon State goalkeeper Johanna Sargent over her head to the corner of the net. The goal was her fourth of the season to tie Ashley Carvalho (Pinellas Park, Fla.) for the team lead.
McMullen added the insurance tally in the 65th minute, chasing down a through ball by Nicole Hess (Wiesbaden, Germany) and powering a shot that glanced off Lyndon State goalkeeper Victoria McCormack's hands, but ultimately rolled into the back of the net. The goal was McMullen's first of the season and Hess picked up her first collegiate point with the assist.
Freshman Katie Bishop-Manning (New York, N.Y.) made six saves to improve to 3-8 on the season and pick up the first shutout of her career.
Norwich outshot Lyndon State 33-10 in the game. McCormack made nine saves in relief for Lyndon State, while Sargent made six and was saddled with the loss.
Head coach Beth Van Parys also picked up her 50th career coaching victory in the win.
