Nov 3, 2007

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Freshman outside hitter Alicia Chamness, who was a force for the Norwich women's volleyball team throughout its 2007 season, was recognized by the GNAC as the Eugene, Ore., native was selected as the conference's "Rookie of the Year" on Friday.

Chamness, who was also the only first-year player selected to the all-league first team, led NU with 218 kills this year. Chamness, who also ranked third on the team with 196 digs, posted nine double-doubles on the year.

Joining Chamness on the all-conference team is freshman setter Molly Rice, who was just as instrumental to the team's success this year as well. The Sunapee, N.H., native led the Cadets with 520 assists and 211 digs.

Both freshmen helped NU make significant improvements from last season's 9-21 final record to this season's 16-8 overall mark. In just its second varsity season, Norwich increased its GNAC victory total from two wins in 2006 to nine wins in 2007, and qualified for the conference's postseason tournament.
