MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - The Norwich University women's volleyball team dropped its season-opening contest on Saturday, losing to Morrisville State College in straight sets.
Morrisville State (1-0) swept Norwich by a 3-0 score via set scores of 25-8, 25-7 and 25-20. It was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The host Mustangs controlled play in the first set, limiting Norwich to eight points. The Cadets offense was held to seven points in the second set, making 10 attacking errors alone in the second stanza.
Norwich trailed by a 9-1 margin in the third set, but rallied to cut the Mustangs lead to 13-12. A four point rally by Morrisville State eliminated any chance of a Norwich comeback in the match.
Sophomore Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y.) led the Cadets with five kills on offense. Junior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) handed out 10 assists while sophomore Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y) handled four digs. Oliver had all four of her team's service aces.
The stout Morrisville State defense forced the Cadets into 26 attacking errors. Kirsten Florio was her team's offensive leader with eight kills on 10 swings.
The Cadets return to action Sunday, Sept. 3, taking on Keystone and Penn St.-Behrend at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
