VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team continued its slate of Spring Break games against Bethany College (W.V.) on Sunday.
The Bison swept the Cadets with a 7-2 win in game one and a 4-1 victory in game two.
In game one, Bethany took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first and added a run in both the second and third innings for a 4-0 advantage before Norwich got on the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the third inning senior second baseman Drew Caldwell (Hanover, Mass.) lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored freshman shortstop Jacob Parizo (Groton, Conn.) to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Parizo ripped an RBI double to center in the home half of the fourth inning that plated sophomore catcher Connor Baker (Brookfield, Vt.) and made the score 4-2.
The Bison scored three more runs in the top of the sixth to balloon their lead to 7-2.
Sophomore Andrew Fisher (Tewksbury, Mass.) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. He allowed four earned runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out two batters in five innings of work.
In game two, Bethany took an early lead again, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead. The Bison added an additional run in the bottom of the forth inning and one more in the fifth for a 4-0 lead.
Norwich got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore DH Oliver Brown (Waldoboro, Maine) reached on an error that allowed fellow sophomore left fielder Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) to cross the plate. The comeback bid fell short however, and the game went final at 4-1.
Sophomore Matt Paze (Carlisle, Mass.) was the losing pitcher, falling to 0-1 on the season. He surrendered three runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks. He struck out one batter.
Norwich now sits at 0-6 on the year and is back in action for a doubleheader against Marywood on Tuesday. Those games are set for 10 a.m. and 12:30 a.m.
