WALTHAM, Mass. - The Norwich University baseball team traveled to take on Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Norwich took game one 2-0 thanks to a dominant pitching performance by freshman Luke Johansen (Doylestown, Penn.), while Lasell won the second contest 3-0.
In game one, junior right fielder Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.) delivered a single that scored junior first baseman Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) in the top of the fifth inning to break open a scoreless game. Later in the inning freshman shortstop Jacob Parizo (Groton, Conn.) plated Dayos with an RBI single to make it 2-0 Cadets.
Johanson had a career day on the mound, allowing just five hits over six innings with one walk and two strikeouts. He improves to 1-2 on the season. Senior Ed Gates (Griswold, Conn.) tossed a perfect seventh inning, with one strikeout, to collect his first save of the year. Barlow led the Cadet offense with two hits in the contest.
In game two Lasell responded with a complete game one-hitter by Sean Doris to shut down the Cadet bats. He struck out two batters while fanning 12 to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Lasers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and once in the sixth for the 3-0 win.
Junior Jake Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss to fall to 0-5 on the season. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk. He struck out two batters.
The Cadets now stand at 2-17 overall and 2-2 in conference play while the Lasers are now 4-14 and 3-3 in the GNAC. Norwich is next in action on Sunday, April 15th for a conference doubleheader on the road at Rivier University. Game times are set for 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
