NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University baseball team wrapped up their conference slate of games on Sunday afternoon, falling twice to the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Garrity Field.
Norwich's pitching staff wavered in game one, giving up eight earned runs in the first four innings of play. Tom Doran spun an excellent game on the mound for JWU, going six innings and scattering four hits while giving up just four runs (one earned) and striking out three. Junior Brendon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) provided Norwich with it's lone RBI on the day, going 1-3 on the day with a run scored. Norwich was outhit 14-5 and left nine runners on base in game one.
Game two was a different story for Norwich, as they got a strong start from junior Nick Landis (South Berwick, Maine). Landis kept the Wildcat lineup off balance for the first four innings, giving up just four hits and no runs. His third time through the lineup proved to be one too many, as JWU got four runs in the fifth, to take the lead and never look back. Senior pitcher Jake Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) stepped to the dish in the first inning for his first at-bat in nearly three years and promptly punched an RBI single through the left side. The other Norwich RBI came courtesy of Chris Leach (Vergennes, Vt.) on a run-producing ground out in the fourth. Chris Henderson (Stafford, Va.) worked a spotless inning and a third in relief, striking out two.
In need of a sweep today to sneak into the conference tournament, today's pair of losses spells the end of Norwich baseball's playoff hunt. They'll play a pair of non-conference games against Pine Manor on Tuesday at 2:00 & 4:30 to wrap up their 2019 season.
