VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team picked up its first two wins of 2019, sweeping Delaware Valley with scores 7-6 and 10-7 on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, junior third baseman Brendon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) lifted a sacrifice fly that plated senior centerfielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) in the top of the first inning for an early 1-0 lead.
The Aggies rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first, one in the third and one in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Profita delivered again, this time with a clutch, two-out RBI single that once again plated Lynch to cut the lead to 5-2.
Delaware Valley added another run in the bottom half of the fifth to regain a four run lead at 6-2, setting the state for the Norwich comeback.
The Cadet offense exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning as senior second baseman? Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) delivered an RBI single while Lynch, junior designated hitter Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) and Profita all drew bases loaded walks to tie the game 6-6. Sophomore right fielder Nate Gehringer (Northampton, Penn.) then plated Lynch on an RBI groundout to take the 7-6 lead.
Profita finished the game with three RBIs while Lesco went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Sophomore Chris Henderson (Stafford, Va.) shut the door on the Aggies in relief, tossing two perfect innings and collecting three strikeouts on his way to improving to 1-0 on the season.
Junior Nick Landis (South Berwick, Maine) started on the bump for the Cadets, tossing five innings and allowing six earned runs on nine hits. He struck out three.
In game two, the Cadets struck first again as Profita delivered yet another sacrifice fly that score Lynch and made it 1-0. In the bottom of the second NU added two more runs on an RBI single by sophomore left fielder Koby Foster (Estill Springs, Tenn.) and a bases loaded walk drawn by Lynch.
Lynch then lifted his own sac fly in the bottom of the fourth inning that plated freshman catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.) for a 4-0 lead.
The Aggies rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the game to 4-3 but in the home half of the inning sophomore shortstop Jacob Parizo (Groton, Conn.) delivered an RBI single that scored Profita (who had singled earlier in the frame) for the insurance run at 5-3.
Delaware Valley struck back in the top of the sixth to take its first lead of the game at 6-5, setting the stage for another Norwich comeback win.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lynch dropped an RBI bunt single that scored Foster to tie the game. Profita then kept his bat hot with a two-run double that scored Doherty and Lynch. Parizo followed by reaching on an error, allowing Profita to score to make it 9-6. Junior pinch-hitter Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.) then reached on a sacrifice bunt that scored Parizo for a 10-6 lead that Norwich would not relinquish.
Junior CJ Davis (South Berwick, Maine) picked up the win for the Cadets after tossing two and two-third innings of relief. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two.
Norwich improves to 2-2 on the season while Delaware Valley falls to 1-4. The Cadets are next in action on Tuesda, March 12th for a doubleheader against Geneva. Those games are set for 11 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
