NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team hosted Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Garrity Field on Friday afternoon.
The Lasers swept the Cadets with a 10-4 win in game one and a 5-3 win in eight innings in game two.
In game one, Lasell broke open a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the third inning. Norwich rallied for a run in the home half of the third as sophomore shortstop Jacob Parizo (Groton, Conn.) lined an RBI single to center field that scored senior second baseman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.).
The Lasers rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth for a 6-1 lead before the Cadets rallied once again in the bottom of the frame.
Junior left fielder Chris Dayos (Temecula, Calif.) started the rally with his first-career home run to make it 6-2. Lesco followed with RBI single to cut it to 6-3. Junior third baseman Brendon Profita (New Milford, Conn.) then singled to right, scoring Lesco for a 6-4 score.
Lasell scored two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh for the 10-4 final.
Freshman Tanner Raymond (Southbury, Conn.) took the loss for the Cadets after allowing six earned runs on nine hits and one walk in four innings of work. He struck out one batter.
Parizo finished the game with three hits and one walk to pace the Norwich offense. Lesco also ripped three hits and scored two runs for the Cadets.
In game two, Lasell jumped out to an early lead again, holding a 2-0 edge after one inning of play. Norwich rallied for two runs in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by senior center fielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) and fellow senior right fielder Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) to tie the game 2-2.
Lynch then delivered another RBI single in the fourth inning for a 3-2 Norwich lead. Lasell managed to tie the game 3-3 in the sixth and sent the game to extra innings after a scoreless seventh.
The Lasers scored twice in the top of the eighth for the 5-3 lead and the Cadets couldn't muster any runs in the bottom of the frame for the 5-3 final.
Senior Jake Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) allowed three runs (two earned) on just three hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out five batters and falls to 2-4 on the season.
Raymond served as the designated hitter in game two and provided a nice spark at the plate, collecting two hits and two runs scored.
Norwich now stands at 5-17 on the season and 3-8 in GNAC play while Lasell is 17-13 overall and 7-6 in conference action.
Norwich is next in action on Monday, April 22nd for a non-conference doubleheader at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon. Those games are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
