LYNDON, Vt. – The Norwich University baseball team traveled to face Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
The Hornets swept the Cadets with a 4-0 win in game one and a close 1-0 victory in game two.
In game one, NVU-Lyndon broke open a scoreless deadlock with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Norwich couldn't rally in the seventh as Lyndon took the 4-0 final.
Freshman pitcher Jon Grasso (Haddam, Conn.) was solid on the mound, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk. He struck out five batters and falls to 0-2 on the season.
Senior center fielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) went three-for-three at the plate with three singles and two stolen bases to lead the Cadets. Senior right fielder Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) also collected a single in the loss.
In game two, the Hornets struck in the bottom of the second for what would be the game-winning run.
Despite outhitting the Hornets 5-4, Norwich was unable to push across a run in the nightcap. Freshman designated hitter Tanner Raymond (Southbury, Conn.), Barlow, freshman catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.), Chris Leach (Vergennes, Vt.) and freshman left fielder Michael Koytikh (Melrose, Mass.) each had a hit.
The Cadets spoiled a strong start by junior Nick Landis (South Berwick, Maine) on the hill as he went 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and one earned run, while walking three and striking out one. Sophomore Chris Henderson (Stafford, Va.) came on to record the final out in the bottom of the sixth in relief.
Norwich will look to get back on track when it hosts Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Garrity Field.
