NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Head Coach Mark Murnyack announced his two selections for team captain for the 2018 season on Monday afternoon, naming seniors Jared Barton and Bo Phillips as co-captains for the 122nd season of Norwich football.
"These two young men understand and believe in the university's guiding values, the football program mission, and the great responsibility that comes with being a leader. Just as important, they possess the qualities that leaders do," Munyack said. "They are passionate, reliable, and goal-oriented individuals who have earned the respect of their peers. I believe they understand the responsibility associated with being a captain, accept the challenge, and have the courage to follow through."
Jared Barton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) started three games for the Cadets on the offensive line last season before a knee injury ended his season prematurely. "He went through a long recovery and is eager to be back on the field" Murnyack stated. Barton has seen action in eight games for the Cadets in his first three years in maroon and gold, and will look to anchor the offensive line from the guard position this year.
His co-captain, Bo Phillips (Chappaqua, N.Y.), had a breakout junior season for the Cadets last season. The defensive back led the Cadets in interceptions (6) while racking up 56.0 total tackles and starting all ten games for the Cadets. According to Coach Murnyack, Phillips will lead the defensive unit, making all the checks and in-game adjustments as the Cadets defense looks to build on their 2017 season.
The 122nd season of Norwich football and the program's second season in the New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) gets underway on September 1st at Sabine Field with a matchup against non-conference opponent Morrisville State. September 22nd will see the start of NEWMAC play when Norwich travels to take on the rival Bears of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for the 76th meeting between the two historic programs.
