Football: Manni Romero takes home Golden Helmet and D3football Team of the Week Honors

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Sophomore wide receiver Manni Romero (Phillipsburg, N.J.) received both the New England Football Writers Association Golden Helmet Award and a spot on the Team of the Week after his record-breaking 10 reception, 272-yards receiving performance on Saturday against Merchant Marine.

Romero's 272 yards broke a Norwich football record set in 1984 by Darian Almondobar, as he broke off touchdown catches of 61-yards and 73-yards against the Mariners during Norwich's 34-22 loss on Saturday. This is Romero's second brush with Norwich football history, as his four touchdown catches against Coast Guard in week four tied a Norwich record set by Pierre Garcon in 2004. Seeing action in just three contests so far this fall Romero has totaled 21 receptions for 432 yards and seven touchdowns, putting him in striking distance of Pierre Garcon's single-season touchdown record of 13 set in 2004.

The Golden Helmet Award is presented to the Division I (FBS and FCS) and II/III football players who have established himself for outstanding contributions to his team on the given week at the New England Football Writers luncheon at Harvard. Romero will be presented with his award during the New England Football Writer's weekly luncheon inside Dillon Field House on the campus of Harvard University. The weekly event is the nation's oldest organized luncheon, and it is now in its 81st season, with the award being presented by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation this year. The last Norwich player to take home the Golden Helmet Award was running back Orwin Etkins in 2009, with a 22-year gap between Etkins and the last Norwich recipient in the late 1980s.

Romero's second award of the week came on Tuesday afternoon, as released their weekly Team of the Week list with Romero as one of the two wide receivers selected. This is the 20th season that has selected the Team of the Week, which honors the top player nationally at each position from the previous week. Romero is just the second Cadet in history to make a Team of the Week, following kicker Long Ding in 2011.

Manni Romero and the rest of the Cadets will be back in action on October 20th following their bye week, when they travel to take on Maine Maritime in a NEWMAC battle at 12:00 PM.
