NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University football's junior wide receiver Manni Romero (Phillipsburg, N.J.) picked up a pair of post-season accolades as he was named to the 2019 New England Football Writers College Division All-New England Team and was selected for the 24th annual Joe Zabilski Award by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston in a release by the two organizations on Monday.
Just on the heels of being named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference First Team last week, Romero became one of 29 players selected to represent the 2019 Division II/III All-Stars which boasts players from 20 teams in New England. The NEWMAC was represented by Romero and WPI's Sean McAllen and Vince Lucca.
The 24th annual Joe Zabilski award is named in honor of Joe Zabilski, Boston College '43, coach of Northeastern University, and former Gridiron Club president. The award recognizes New England's best offensive and defense collegiate players in Divisions II and III.
Romero earned the special honor for his outstanding performance during the 2019 campaign which saw him record 60 receptions for 1,235 yards and 10 touchdowns. He registered seven touchdowns that went for more than 30 yards and five that went for more than 50 yards. He recorded eight games this season with more than 100 yards receiving. Romero ranked 8th in the NCAA Division III in receiving yards and fifth in receiving yards per game (123.5).
Romero becomes the first Cadet to be named as the Joe Zabilski offensive player of the year. He is also the 9th Cadet to earn the All-New England Team distinction since 1995 with the latest recipient being kicker Long Ding '12 in 2011.
The All-New England team will be honored at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Thursday, December 12, at Rosaria Restaurant and Function Facility in Saugus, Mass. The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston will host its awards banquet on Thursday, December 19.
