NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Saints held the Cadets scoreless over the final 3:40 and went on to a 60-55 win in GNAC quarterfinal action. Emmanuel (11-15) was down 55-51 at that point and went on a 9-0 run to advance to Thursday night's GNAC semifinals. Norwich (13-12) led by 10 points on four occasions in the second half, but Emmanuel had an answer each time.
Norwich opened the game with a 12-4 run over the first six minutes. Emmanuel countered with a 17-4 spurt to take a 21-16 lead with six and a half minutes to play. The Cadets closed out the first half with a 15-6 run to take a 31-27 halftime lead.
Norwich built its first 10-point lead two minutes into the second half, but Emmanuel's Mack Spellman cut the advantage down to three points with a pair of jumpers and a three-point bucket. The Cadets went back up by 10 with 14:43 to play and again one minute later. NU's final 10-point advantage was a 49-39 lead with 11:18 to go when the Saints went on a 10-2 run to trail 51-49 with six and a half minutes remaining. Jump shots by Rene Cheatham and Mike Filipek gave the Cadets a 55-51 lead with 3:40 to play, but the Saints took over from there.
Rob Williams-Hinton led three Emmanuel players in double figures with 16 points. Spellman chipped in 15 points, while Levi Smith added 10 points.
Jerrold Williams led Norwich with a team-high 14 points, while Jamel Bedford scored 12 points.
The Saints will play at top-seed WNEC in Thursday's GNAC semifinal game at 7 p.m. WNEC breezed past eighth-seed Daniel Webster, 81-50. Elsewhere, seventh-seeded Suffolk shocked second-seeded Emerson 80-75, while third-seeded Rivier defeated sixth-seeded Johnson & Wales 88-76 in overtime.
