NORTHFIELD, Vt. - After producing three double-doubles last week, and leading the Cadets to the Hockenbury Tournament championship over the weekend, Norwich junior men's basketball player Jamel Bedford was named the GNAC "Player of the Week" on Tuesday.
Bedford averaged 17.7 ppg., and 13.7 rpg., in Norwich's three games last week, leading the Cadets to wins over Colby-Sawyer, Johnson State and Nichols.
The Queens, N.Y., native began his big week on Thursday against Colby-Sawyer, when he scored 20 points, hauled in 17 rebounds and blocked five shots as the Cadets overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to beat the Chargers by 10 on the road.
On Saturday night, Bedford netted a season-high 21 points and ripped down 12 rebounds as Norwich cruised past Johnson State, 83-68, in the opening round of the Hockenbury Tournament. Then, in the Hockenbury Tournament championship game, he scored 20 points and secured 12 rebounds as the Cadets came back from a 13-point halftime deficit to beat Nichols, 66-64.
Bedford's play in the Hockenbury Tournament (20.5 ppg., 12.0 rpg.) helped him earn tournament MVP honors.
For the season, Bedford is averaging 16.0 ppg, and 12.0 rpg. He has registered four straight double-doubles, going back to NU's victory over FDU-Florham. Norwich won all four of those games, and the Cadets stand at 4-1 with two games remaining before the holiday break.
Norwich returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when the Cadets travel to Middlebury, Vt., to take on the Middlebury College Panthers. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
