NEWTON, Mass. - Jerrold Williams scored a game-high 22 points, and Jamel Bedford his fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Norwich men's basketball team fell to Mount Ida, 70-60, in the Cadets' GNAC opener.
Mount Ida (3-5, 1-1 GNAC) used a 20-3 run early in the second half to run away from the Cadets, who have lost two straight following a four-game win streak.
Thomas Belton led a trio of Mustangs in double figures with 17 points. Bruce Cary added 16 points and a game-high six assists, while Otis Thompson chipped in 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Norwich (4-3, 0-1 GNAC) started strong, jumping out to a 15-8 lead at the 12:18 mark. Williams scored eight of his 22 points during the game-opening spurt. Mount Ida reeled off an 18-5 run over the next nine minutes to assume a 26-20 advantage at the 3:29 mark. The Mustangs increased their cushion to seven points twice during the remainder of the half, before settling for a 34-28 halftime lead.
Chris Gaither opened up the second half with a three-pointer to draw NU to within three points at 34-31 at the 19:21 mark, but Mount Ida outscored the Cadets, 20-3, over the next nine minutes to take a commanding 54-34 lead with 10:15 to play.
Norwich refused to go away, ripping off a quick 14-4 spurt to trim Mount Ida's lead to 58-48 at the 6:50 mark. The Cadets were unable to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Mustangs held on for the victory.
Norwich will be idle until Jan. 5, when the Cadets travel to Providence, R.I., to take on Johnson & Wales. The GNAC contest is set to tip off at 3 p.m.
