STANDISH, Maine - Jaren Jeffcoat led a quartet of Cadets in double-figures with a game-high 21 points as the Norwich University men's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's (Maine), 76-73, in a GNAC contest Saturday afternoon.
Jeffcoat shot 6-of-11 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line to pace the Norwich offense. Jerrold Williams and Tim Fico with 14 points apiece, while Mike Filipek notched his first double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Derrick Montiero chipped in with nine points and team-high three assists.
The Cadets, who effectively snapped their brief three-game losing streak with today's victory, improve to 12-10 (8-8 GNAC). The Monks, meanwhile, fall to 11-11 (9-6 GNAC).
The game went back and forth over the first nine minutes with Norwich clinging to a 12-11 lead at the 11:05 mark. An 11-1 spurt by the Cadets over the next four minutes gave the visitors a 23-12 advantage with 7:16 to play before halftime. The Monks closed the half on a 14-7 run to trim NU's lead to 30-26 at the break.
St. Joseph's (Maine) continued its strong play during the opening minutes of the second half, scoring the first six points of the stanza to take a 32-30 lead at the 17:58 mark. After Norwich tied the game at 32-32, the Monks used an 8-2 run to open up a 40-34 lead with 14:55 to play in the second half.
A 13-7 push by the Cadets tied the score at 47-47 at the 10:59 mark. The two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes, and the score was again tied at 53-53 at the 8:33 mark. A jumper by Jeffcoat, a three-pointer by Fico and a lay-up by Filipek fueled a 9-2 Norwich burst that gave the Cadets a 62-55 lead with 5:38 showing on the second half clock.
St. Joseph's (Maine) refused to go away, however, ripping off six unanswered points to creep to within 62-61 at the 3:44 mark. Another triple by Fico bumped the Cadets lead back up to four points moments later, and the Cadets converted 9-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes to hold on for the victory.
Raymond Eatmon led four St. Joseph's (Maine) players in double-figures with a team-high 20 points. Alberto Rue added 18 points on six three-pointers, while Elbie Murphy chipped in 13 points and Chris Davis added 12 points.
Norwich returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 19, when the Cadets host GNAC rival Suffolk in NU's regular season home finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
