Men's Basketball: Norwich Downs Suffolk, 72-60

BOSTON - Senior Jerrold Williams scored 21 points to lead three players in double figures as Norwich pulled away in the final five-plus minutes of action to notch a 72-60 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over Suffolk Saturday afternoon at Regan Gymnasium.

The visiting Cadets (9-7, 5-5 GNAC) scored 18 of the game's first 23 points to take an early 13-point advantage, but the host Rams (2-15, 1-9 GNAC) answered back with a 14-2 run of their own to close the gap to one at 20-19 midway through the opening 20 minutes.

Norwich built its lead back to eight points before settling for a 35-30 advantage at the break, and the visitors pushed that margin up to 12 points early after intermission before Suffolk scored 11 unanswered points to close back to within one at 48-47 with 10:44 to play in the contest. The Rams trimmed their deficit to four midway through the second stanza, but Norwich scored 17 of the game's final 26 points, as Williams made four free throws to go with a lay-in in the final 2:01 of action to seal the visitors' triumph.

Junior Jamel Bedford added 16 points and seven rebounds in the win for Norwich, which also received 14 points and seven boards from junior Mike Filipek.  Freshman Jaren Jeffcoat grabbed eight boards in the triumph for the Cadets, who shot 46 percent from the field and converted 27 Suffolk turnovers into 23 points while holding a commanding 23-7 scoring advantage at the foul line for the contest.

Brian Small led Suffolk with his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Rams also received 13 points from freshman Mike Fleming, as well as 11 points, six rebounds and five assists from sophomore Alan Jaziri.  Mario Massimino finished with eight points and eight boards for the hosts, who shot 42 percent from the field and canned nine three-pointers but hurt themselves at the charity stripe, missing 12 of 19 attempts while holding a 39-31 rebounding advantage for the afternoon.

Norwich returns home on Thursday, Jan. 31, when the Cadets host Mount Ida at Andrews Hall. Gametime for the GNAC matchup is slated for 7 p.m.
