BOSTON, Mass. – The Norwich University men's basketball team traveled south on Thursday evening to face off against the University of Massachusetts-Boston, dropping the season opener to the Beacons 66-52.
The first half was tightly contested, as the Cadets never trailed by more than eight points. A pair of Daniel Haimes (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) free throws cut the Beacons' lead to six headed into the half.
UMass-Boston came out strong in the second half, rattling off a 10-2 run right away to go up by 15 early on. Lead by a Dasan Cinelli double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds) and a game-high 18 points from Michael Boyd, the Beacons outscored the Cadets 31-23 in the second half and sealed up the 66-52 victory.
As a team, the Cadets were beaten down low tonight, as the Beacons outscored NU in the paint to a 24-10 tune. Turnovers didn't help the Cadets tonight either, as UMass-Boston converted 17 Cadets turnovers into 18 points.
Haimes lead the Cadets with 10 points on the night, including two baskets from three-point land. Senior Ryan Booth (Northfield, Vt.) pulled down 9 rebounds and added 5 points and a steal for good measure. Zygimantas Sirvydas (Silale, Lithuania) recorded 7 rebounds himself, as well 7 points on 75% shooting from the field. Ryan Fitzgerald (Winchester, Mass.) and Jesse Davis (Woodinville, Wash. ) provided some bench support for the Cadets tonight, netting a combined 15 points between the two of them.
The Cadets will return to the friendly confines of Andrews Hall this Saturday, November 18th, for their home opener against Plymouth State, a game set to tip-off at 1:00 pm.
