NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich men's basketball team wrapped up play in the 2017 Ed Hockenbury Classic on Sunday afternoon, dropping the third-place game to Worcester State, 83-80. The Wheaton Lyons defeated Lesley University in the title game, 80-63.
In a game that saw 11 ties and 17 lead changes, Norwich came up just short at the buzzer. Down 83-80 with 1.7 seconds on the clock, the inbound pass was heaved up court to Christopher Bryant (Crestview, Fla.) who was able to dish it to Joe Bertrand (Saugus, Mass.) who got the shot off before the buzzer sounded from about 5 feet behind the 3-point line. The brilliant play call and execution by the Cadets resulted in a clean look for Bertrand, but the shot was just wide.
The Lancers of Worcester State were led by a phenomenal performance by Will Watkins Jr., who put together a career game. The sophomore forward poured in 37 points, seemingly unable to miss from 3-point land. Watkins Jr. went 10-14 from behind the arc and went 13-18 from the field.
Senior Zygimantas Sirvydas (Silale, Lithuania) led the way again for the Cadets, netting 17 points and dishing out 8 assists. Jesse Davis (Woodinville, Wash.) provided a big-time spark off the bench for Norwich, pouring in a team-high 20 points. Senior Ryan Booth (Northfield, Vt.) put together another high-offense night with 19 points.
The second game of the day featured the Lesley University Lynx against the Lyons of Wheaton College for the Hockenbury Championship. Wheaton pulled out to an early lead, entering halftime up by 11, and didn't let go, taking the title by an 80-63 final score.
