DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Norwich University men's basketball team traveled south this week to compete at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida, kicking off play with a 97-74 loss to Wilkes University on Friday afternoon.
Wilkes controlled the game from the tip-off, taking a 10-4 advantage after only two and a half minutes of play. Norwich hung with the Colonels for the remainder of the half, managing to enter the half only trailing 30-23. The second half saw the Cadets manage to cut the lead to 14 with 8:18 left in the game, but Wilkes closed things out on a 26-14 run to take this game by a 97-74 final score.
Norwich was led by freshman Jesse Davis (Woodinville, Wash.) who continued the hot start to his debut season with a team-leading and career-high 24 points, along with 4 steals and 3 rebounds. Ryan Fitzgerald (Winchester, Mass.) chipped in 15 points off the bench, along with senior Mike Hogervorst (Leiden, South Holland, Netherlands) who tallied 10 points on the day. Wilkes was led by Rob Pecorelli and his career-high 33 points on 12-16 shooting, including 9-13 from three-point range.
The loss drops Norwich down to a 1-7 overall record on the 2017-18 season, but the Cadets immediately have an opportunity to turn things around tomorrow. Taking on a familiar foe in Colby-Sawyer College, Norwich will look to wrap up their trip to Florida with a victory at 1:00 PM on Saturday afternoon. Following that, the squad will return to the friendly confines of Andrews Hall to resume Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play against Saint Joseph's of Maine on January 6th at 3:00 PM.
