NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's basketball team defeated the Raiders of Rivier University on Thursday night by an 84-51 final score, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) at Andrews Hall.
Both teams could've used a little more time in warmups, as neither team hit a field goal for the first eight minutes of game time. Tristian Givens finally broke the streak with a jumper at the 12:53 mark in the half, but Norwich responded with a 9-0 run to make it 16-5 Cadets. Givens hit another three with merely three seconds on the clock to make it a 35-25 game heading into the half.
The second half saw the Cades come out on an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 19 all of a sudden, and the game devolved into a runaway 33-point victory for the maroon and gold.
Mike Hogervorst (Leiden, Netherlands) led the way for Norwich with 16 points and 6 rebounds in only 19 minutes of play, as the big man took nearly the entire second half off thanks to Norwich's runaway lead. Ryan Booth (Northfield, Vt.) collected 16 points of his own, and classmate Tommy Fitzgerald (Williston, Vt.) filled the stat sheet with 7 points, 9 rebounds (4 offensive), 4 assists, and 4 steals.
The Cadets outpaced the Raiders in rebounds (42-29), assists (14-8), points in the paint (26-10), and shooting percentage (46.3%-29.5%).
With the win, the Cadets bump their overall record up to 9-10 on the year and a 6-4 record within the GNAC. Heading into the homestretch of the regular season, the Cadets will stay within the conference for their next tilt when they travel to Albertus Magnus for a 1:00 PM showdown with the GNAC powerhouse on Saturday.
