NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Norwich University men's basketball team narrowly missed handing Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) powerhouse Albertus Magnus their first conference defeat of the year on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons managed to squeak out the 79-75 victory.
With barely a minute left in regulation, Norwich found itself locked into a 73-73 tie with the reigning conference champions after an intense, back and forth contest. Reigning GNAC Player of the Year Jaqhawn Walters dropped in a layup to give the Falcons a slim two-point advantage, and two more free throws from Hanif Bilal made it 77-73. Zygimantas Sirvydas (Silale, Lithuania) came down court and dropped in a layup to cut the lead to two, but Bilal calmy hit two more free throws after an intentional foul to seal the 79-75 victory.
Sirvydas led the way for the Cadets with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals on the day. Mike Hogervorst (Leiden, Netherlands) had an efficient 6-8 day from the field for 13 points as well as pulling down 6 rebounds. Walters put together a dominating 29 point, 16 rebound double-double to lead the Falcons.
Norwich returns to Andrews Hall on Tuesday evening for another GNAC bout, this time with the Mustangs of Mount Ida College at 7:00 PM.
