NORTHFIELD, Vt. - A late rally by the Mount Ida Mustangs couldn't overcome a commanding Cadets lead, as Norwich cruised to a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory on Tuesday night by a 69-63 final score.
A game of two halves unfolded on Tuesday, with the Cadets controlling the opening half by a 43-20 count and Mount Ida rallying to outscore NU in the second half 43-26. Norwich managed to hold off the ferocious Mustangs' comeback in the second half, as Mount Ida managed to cut the lead all the way down to three points with a mere 16 seconds remaining. A few clutch free throws from Jesse Davis (Woodinville, Wash.) and Mike Hogervorst (Leiden, Netherlands) managed to seal the deal, and NU walked away with the 69-63 victory.
Hogervorst led the Cadets with a game-high 18 points on the day, while classmate Zygimantas Sirvydas (Silale, Lithuania) put together another complete game with 15 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 4 rebounds. Joe Bertrand (Saugus, Mass.) and Jesse Davis both dropped in 13 points off the bench. Jayson Clark led the way for Mount Ida with 14 points and 4 assists.
With the win, Norwich improves to 10-11 on the season and a 7-5 record within the GNAC. They'll head to Mount Ida on Thursday for their second straight matchup with the Mustangs, set to tipoff at 7:00 PM.
