NEWTON, Mass. – The Norwich University men's basketball let one slip away on Thursday night, falling to the Mustangs of Mount Ida by a 72-68 final score in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
The Cadets let a slim 34-32 halftime advantage slip away, and found themselves trailing the Mustangs by seven points late in the second half. After a pair of Ryan Booth (Northfield, Vt.) free throws, the lead was cut to five, and after a big defensive stop on the ensuing Mustangs' possession, Booth came down the court and calmly sank a three-pointer to make it 70-68 Mount Ida with under a minute left.
Norwich had a chance to get the ball back after a Joey Defillippi missed three-pointer, but Defillippi managed to snag his own rebound. A quick intentional foul sent him to the line, where he hit both his free throws to make it a four-point Mount Ida lead, which Norwich could not overcome.
Ryan Booth had his biggest game of the year, pouring in 26 points on 9-15 shooting from the field. Mike Hogervorst (Leiden, Netherlands) was the only other Cadet to reach double-digit scoring on the night, as the big man collected 12 points in 16 minutes on the floor.
The loss drops NU down to 10-12 overall on the year and 7-6 record within the GNAC. As the regular season winds down, Norwich will look to move up in the standings during their next game when they take on the Johnson & Wales Wildcats for another GNAC contest. The game is set to tipoff at 3:00 PM and will also serve as this season's senior day for Norwich basketball.
