NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's basketball team wrapped up their first semester of play with a 63-52 victory over in-state rival Northern Vermont University-Johnson on Tuesday evening.
The Cadets started the game on fire, opening the game on an 11-4 run capped by a monster Donovan Lewis Jr. (Savannah, Ga.) two-handed slam. Johnson responded with a 9-2 run of their own to cut the Cadet lead down to one. The first half settled into a rhythm of opposing runs, as Norwich would extend their lead only to have the Badgers respond and make things tight all over again. The Cadets ended the half on top, however, entering the break with a 30-20 lead.
Action in the second half stuck to the same pattern, with Johnson cutting the lead down to as little as three points at times. Norwich kept pace, however, going 6-8 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the 63-52 victory.
Jesse Davis (Woodinville, Wash.) led the way with 14 points for Norwich. Lewis Jr. was a force down low, totaling 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two blocks, complimenting his partner in the post Christopher Bryant (Crestview, Fla.) who tallied seven points and a steal while pulling down a game-high 10 boards.
The Cadets enter the winter break with a 5-4 overall record. They'll return to action at the end of the month when they travel to MCLA to participate in a four-team tournament. They'll take on the hosting Trailblazers in their opening game on January 29th, a game set to tipoff at 3:00 PM.
