Men’s Hockey: Gorman, Lindensmith lead No. 1 Norwich to 4-1 win over Babson in historic outdoor game at Fenway Park

BOSTON – The No. 1-ranked Norwich men's ice hockey team got two goals each from sophomore Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.) and freshman Doug Lindensmith (Sterling Heights, Mich.) as the Cadets rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to score four unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 win over Babson in the first ever Division III hockey game played at historic Fenway Park on Friday afternoon.

Babson (3-11-0, 3-4-0 ECAC East) struck first blood on a power play at the 6:24 mark of the first period when Andrew Bonazza capitalized on a Norwich defensive zone turnover to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.

P.T. Donato intercepted a clearing attempt behind the Norwich net and fed a pass to Bonazza all alone in the slot. The turnover caught Norwich goaltender Parker Carroll (West Chester, Pa.) off guard and on the wrong post, allowing Bonazza to flip the puck into the bottom right corner of the cage.

However, Gorman and Lindensmith stole the show from there as Gorman leveled the score at one just under six minutes later to kick start the Norwich comeback.

Gorman took a pass from Emmond Bell (Nepean, Ontario) and skated in from the right wing on Babson goaltender Zeka Testa. He took an initial shot that was blocked by a Babson defender and kicked right back to him. Testa went down to block the initial shot and couldn't recover in time to stop Gorman's second attempt as he collected the puck and fired a wrist shot just under the cross bar for his fourth goal of the season.

Norwich (11-0-1, 7-0-0 ECAC East) broke the game open in the second period with a pair of fortunate bounces off shots from behind the Babson goal line. Lindensmith bounced a pass off a Babson defender's skate that handcuffed Testa and beat him low to his left to give the Cadets their first lead at the 3:12 mark.

Just 4:05 later Gorman made it a two-goal game when he threw a puck towards the net that bounced off the back of Testa's leg and trickled over the line for his second of the night and fifth on the season.

Lindensmith capped the scoring at the 18:22 mark of the third period when he beat Testa five-hole from the middle of the slot on the power play. Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) and Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.) recorded the assists on both of Lindensmith's tallies. Lindensmith moved into a tie for the team lead for goals on the season with Thomas with each having nine.

Carroll improved to 8-0-1 on the season after stopping 18 shots for Norwich. Testa made 31 saves for Babson to fall to 2-7-0.

The announced attendance was 7,250, which is believed to be the largest crowd to ever witness a Norwich hockey game.

Norwich wraps up its Boston road trip on Saturday afternoon when the Cadets take on UMass-Boston at 3 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center.
