Men’s Hockey: Pier-Olivier Cotnoir named finalist for Sid Watson Award; National D-III Player of the Year

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Junior forward Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Sid Watson Award, given annually to the best NCAA Division III men's ice hockey player in the country.

Cotnoir is enjoying a career year so far for the Maroon & Gold with a team-leading 21 goals and 20 assists for 41 points, which ranks tied for fifth in the country with Oswego State junior forward Jon Whitelaw.

He has been especially lethal on the power play with a nation-leading 12 power play tallies to help pace the Cadets' extra-attacker unit that ranks second in the country clicking off at 30.8 percent on the season.

Cotnoir has already picked up numerous awards this season including the 2011-12 ECAC East Player of the Year, 2012 ECAC East Tournament Most Outstanding Player, PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut Tournament Most Valuable Player, as well as being named to the 2012 First Team All-ECAC East - all for the first time in his career.

With his power play goal for the third Norwich goal in Saturday's 3-0 win over Wentworth in the NCAA Quarterfinals, Cotnoir became the 45th player in program history to reach the 100-career-point milestone.

"Pier is one of the most complete and productive players I have ever coached at Norwich," NU head coach Mike McShane said. "He not only excels in the offensive zone, but he also is responsible defensively as a tremendous back checker and penalty killer. He has scored numerous big goals throughout his career for us (including the game-winner in double-overtime in the 2010 national championship). He also quarterbacks our power play and has been a big reason for our success on that unit this season. He leads by example and is well respected by all of his teammates and coaches."

The nine other finalists for the award include; SUNY Brockport senior forward James Cody, Adrian junior forward Zach Graham, Johnson & Wales senior forward Jeremiah Ketts, Amherst senior goalie Jonathon La Rose, UMass-Dartmouth senior forward Mike Owens, Gustavus Adolphus senior forward Ross Ring-Jarvi, St. Norbert senior forward Johan Ryd, Milwaukee School of Engineering senior goalie Connor Toomey and Elmira senior forward Kevin Willer. Nine of the 10 finalists were named their respective conference's Player of the Year.

The winner will be announced on Thursday night at the NCAA Championship banquet in Lake Placid, N.Y. before the start of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship that will be held in the Herb Brooks Arena at the U.S. Olympic Center on March 16 and 17.

Norwich has had two previous Sid Watson Award winners in Keith Aucoin (2001) and Kurtis McLean (2005).
