Men’s Hockey: Cadets Sweep ECAC East Weekly Awards

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – After sweeping its three games last week, the Norwich men's ice hockey team also made a clean sweep of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East weekly awards for the week ending Jan. 29.

Junior forward Colin Mulvey (Worcester, Mass.) was named Player of the Week, sophomore Chris Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) was named Goalie of the Week and freshman defenseman Alec Thieda (Rochester Hills, Mich.) was named Rookie of the Week.

Norwich (16-1-1, 11-1-0 ECAC East) is the first team to sweep all three ECAC East weekly awards this season and the trio brings the Cadets total to 10 players now that have earned individual accolades from the league this season.

Mulvey scored a goal in all three games, including two goals against archrival Middlebury to help Norwich down the Panthers 5-0. He finished the week with four goals and an assist for five points. Mulvey has nine goals and six assists for 15 points on the season.

Czarnota stopped all 15 shots he faced in Tuesday's game against Middlebury to help improve Norwich's record to 7-2-1 in their last 10 meetings with the Panthers. He also made nine saves against the Univ. of New England on Saturday before being pulled for the final five minutes and denying him his third straight shutout.

Czarnota currently is on an impressive consecutive shutout minutes streak of 221:55. He is 6-0-0 on the year with a miniscule 0.37 goals against average and a .978 save percentage.

After missing three straight games with an injury, Thieda returned to the lineup for the Cadets final two games of the week and scored three goals while tallying an assist as well for four points. He leads all Norwich blue liners with four goals and eight assists for 12 points in 15 games this season.

Norwich retained its No. 1-ranking in the poll for the 10th straight week and is still the lone team to be ranked first in the inaugural year of the poll, which has been published the last eight weeks.

The Cadets begin a four-game road trip this weekend when they travel to St. Anselm on Friday and then follow up with New England College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
