NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The top-ranked Norwich men's hockey team got goals from five different players to propel the Cadets to a 5-1 win over Fitchburg State in the 2012 Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament championship game on Saturday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
Thomas was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring three goals on the weekend to help propel Norwich to the two victories.
Although Fitchburg State (3-7-2, 2-3-1 MASCAC) got one back with a goal by Travis Bertolotti at the 12:57 mark of the first period, that's as close as the Falcons would get as Norwich scored the next three goals to stay unbeaten on the season and win its own holiday tournament for the first time in three years.
Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) scored his first goal since Nov. 26 with a superb individual play at the 14:08 mark of the second period to give Norwich a two-goal lead again. Cotnoir kept the puck in at the blue line, danced around a couple of Fitchburg State defenders in the slot and then wristed the puck past the Falcons' goalie Randy Wolcott to make it 3-1.
Freshman forward Nevin Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.), who was playing against his older brother, Trevor, scored the first goal of his collegiate career when he banged home a rebound off a scramble in front of the net at the 17:53 mark of the second.
Junior forward Tory Allan (Davidson, Sask.) capped the scoring on the night when he put home a rebound off an initial shot by Alec Thieda (Rochester Hills, Mich.) Allan was named to All-Tournament team along with Doug Lindensmith (Sterling Heights, Mich.) who had a goal and two assists in Friday's 4-2 win over Morrisville State.
Sophomore Chris Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) improved to 3-0-0 on the year by turning aside 16 shots for the Cadets in goal. Wolcott made 35 saves for Fitchburg State.
Norwich outshot Fitchburg State 40-17. Both teams were 1-for-2 on the power play and each team was whistled for three penalties for six minutes.
Elmira defeated Morrisville State 4-1 in the consolation game earlier in the day. Kevin Willer had two goals to lead the Soaring Eagles to the win.
Norwich (10-0-1, 6-0-0 ECAC East) returns to action next Friday when the Cadets travel to Boston to take on Babson outdoors at Fenway Park. Face off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon. NU finishes up the weekend at UMass-Boston on Saturday afternoon.
