Hockey: Men and Women’s Hockey ranked No. 1 in national polls

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University is on top of the Division III hockey world.

For the first time in school history, both of the Norwich men and women's hockey teams are ranked No. 1 in and United States College Hockey national polls.

The men retained the top spot in the poll for the eighth straight week, despite losing their first game of 2011-12 on Saturday afternoon to UMass-Boston, 2-1. NU did split the weekend though as the Cadets downed Babson 4-1 in the first Division III hockey game ever played at Fenway Park.

Norwich has been ranked No. 1 in the inaugural season for the poll all six weeks it has been published.

The men (11-1-1, 7-0-1 ECAC East) return to action this weekend with a home and home series against in-state foe St. Michael's on Friday and Saturday. The Cadets travel to South Burlington for a 7 p.m. game on Friday night and then head back down I-89 on Saturday for Saturday's 4 p.m. faceoff.

After spending every week since Nov. 1 at the No. 2 spot in the and polls, the Norwich women finally jumped back on top after RIT went 0-1-1 over the weekend against Plattsburgh State.

The women (12-1-1, 9-0-1 ECAC East) downed St. Michael's 6-0 on Thursday in their lone game of the week.

The Norwich women will host arch-rival Manhattanville on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena and then follow up with a 1 p.m. game against Nichols on Saturday.

Norwich holding the top spot in both the men and women's poll marks the first time since Jan. 19, 2009 that a school has held the top spot in both. Plattsburgh last achived the feat and before that Middlebury did after the Panther men and women's hockey teams swept the national championship for the third straight year. men's poll women's poll men's poll women's poll
