BOSTON – Gridiron Club of Greater Boston president Paul Stewart announced on Thursday that Norwich men's ice hockey junior forward Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.) has been named a semi-finalist for the 2012 Joe Concannon Award.
The award is presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England playing at the NCAA Division-II/III level.
Thomas is one of 18 semifinalists that also include three other ECAC East competitors with Anthony Fitti (UMass-Boston), Tim King (Saint Anselm) and Nick Lazorko (Castleton State).
Thomas has posted 14 goals and 17 assists for 31 points in 21 games to list second on the Cadets' high-octane offense that ranks fourth in all of Division III, averaging 4.62 goals per game.
The Gridiron Club plans to announce the finalists and winner of the 12th Joe Concannon Award in March, prior to the start of NCAA Frozen Four Tournament play and present the award during the New England Hockey Writers dinner in mid-April.
Norwich has had one Concannon Award winner with Keith Aucoin claiming the inaugural trophy in 2001. Castleton State's Josh Harris was last year's recipient after he led the nation in scoring with 16 goals and 34 assists for 50 points.
NU didn't have a semi-finalist last season, but the Cadets had two in 2010 with senior goalie Ryan Klingensmith and senior defenseman Eric Tallent in the running before falling short to eventual winner Coleman Noonan of Saint Anselm.
