Men’s Hockey: Cadets Shutout Trois-Rivieres 3-0

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich men's hockey team wrapped up its exhibition schedule before the start of the 2011-12 regular season on Sunday night at Kreitzberg Arena with an impressive 3-0 win over Trois-Rivieres.

The Cadets got power play goals from junior forwards Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.) and Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.), as well as an even strength tally from Doug Lindensmith (Sterling Heights, Mich.).

After a scoreless first period that featured wide open and fast-paced hockey, Cotnoir finally got Norwich on the board with a power play goal at the 17:34 mark of the second period. Colin Mulvey (Worcester, Mass.) tipped a pass from Travis Janke (Moose Jaw, Sask.) in the slot to Cotnoir, who was waiting on the weak side of the goal. Cotnoir corralled the pass and then fired the puck back door past Trois-Rivieres starting goaltender Vincent Lamontagne.

The Cadets added to their lead just 2:13 into the third period when Thomas pounced on a rebound opportunity after Guillaume Nadeau made an initial save on a shot from Lindensmith. Thomas was waiting on the doorstep of the crease and slipped the puck top shelf into the upper right of the goal before Nadeau could recover to make it 2-0.

Lindensmith capped the scoring at the 18:26 mark of the third period when he followed Kyle Thomas in on a breakaway and knocked the puck home past a sprawled out Nadeau after Thomas' shot hit the post.

Norwich outshot Trois-Rivieres 28-14. Once again the Cadets' defense was stellar at limiting shots and quality scoring chances as they held Dartmouth to just 13 shots last Sunday in a 3-1 loss to the Big Green.

Sophomore goaltender Parker Carroll (West Chester, Pa.) turned aside all 14 shots he faced to pick up the shutout for Norwich. Lamontagne made 16 saves for Trois-Riveries and Nadeau made nine saves. The Cadets finished 2-for-4 on the power play while the Patriots were 0-for-3.

Norwich opens up the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11 at Southern Maine at 7 p.m. The Cadets will then follow up with the University of New England on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m.
