Men’s Hockey: Cadets shutout Univ. of New England 5-0 in ECAC East Quarterfinals

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Freshman forward Doug Lindensmith (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored twice and sophomore goalie Parker Carroll (West Chester, Pa.) stopped all 14 shots he faced to lead the Norwich men's ice hockey team to a 5-0 win over the University of New England in ECAC East Quarterfinal action on Saturday night at Kreitzberg Arena.

With the victory, top-seeded Norwich (21-2-2) will now host the ECAC East final four next Friday and Saturday. The Cadets will take on sixth-seeded Southern Maine on Friday in one semifinal with No. 2-seed Castleton playing fourth-seeded Skidmore in the other semifinal. The two semifinal winners will meet Saturday in the ECAC East championship game at 7 p.m.

Sophomore forward Travis Janke (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) scored his first goal since Jan. 24 to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead that they would never look back from.  Janke scored his ninth of the year beating UNE goalie Ian Edwards low to the left side of the cage off a pass from Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.) from behind the net.

Lindensmith netted his first of the game and 13th on the year when he followed up his own rebound and flipped a shot past a sprawled out Edwards on his backhand to increase the Norwich lead to 2-0. Senior captain defenseman Shawn Baker (Mont-Laurier, Quebec) picked up an assist after his shot was initially saved by Edwards before Lindensmith took over.

Senior defenseman Owen Carpino (Nashua, N.H.) scored his third goal of the year and second in the last three games when he finished off a textbook tic-tac-toe triangle passing set-up from Chris Duszynski (Okotoks, Alberta) and Tory Allan (Davidson, Saskatchewan).

Allan started the play by feeding Duszynski in the high slot from the goal line. Duszynski corralled the puck, hesitated to get Edwards to commit, and then fed the puck to his right to a wide open Carpino. Carpino settled the pass and then wristed the puck into a wide open net before Edwards could scramble back into position.

Norwich added two more goals in the third period with Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) scoring unassisted for his 17th goal of the season and Lindensmith adding his second of the night at the 16:26 mark to cap the scoring.

Cotnoir capitalized on a UNE defensive zone turnover and sniped a wrist shot over Edwards' right shoulder to extend his team lead in goals.

Lindensmith tipped a shot into a wide open net with Edwards caught out of the crease after Blake Forkey (Boca Raton, Fla.) fed him on the doorstep of the crease. Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.) also picked up an assist on the Cadets' final tally of the night.

Edwards made 33 saves for UNE to fall to 3-16-1 on the year. Carroll picked up his 13th win of the season and second shutout.

The Cadets remained perfect against UNE with the win and are now 7-0-0 all-time against the Nor'Easters. NU also extended its home unbeaten streak to 26 straight games. The win was also the 200th victory for Norwich men's hockey at Kreitzberg Arena. The Cadets are an impressive 200-23-8 in the 14-year history of Kreitzberg.
