MARSHFIELD, Mass. – Senior Braeden Ostepchuk (Lethbridge, Alberta) and freshman Coby Downs (Montclair, Calif.) of the Norwich University men's ice hockey team each earned New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) weekly honors on Monday.
Ostepchuk earned the fourth NEHC Goalie of the Week award of his career and the first of this season after backstopping the Cadets to two victories over UMass Boston and Babson on the weekend.
Ostepchuk stopped all 27 shots he faced in a 5-0 win over UMass Boston to pick up the 10th shutout of his collegiate career on Friday. He then followed up with 22 more saves on Saturday in a 4-2 win over Babson.
Friday's win over UMass Boston was the 40th win of Ostepchuk's collegiate career. Randy Hevey '03 holds the program record for career wins with 54.
Downs was named the Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career after scoring a goal and dishing out an assist from three points on the weekend. He scored twice to lead NU to the 5-0 win over UMass Boston. He then added an assist on the insurance goal in Saturday's win over Babson.
Norwich (2-1-0, 2-0-0 NEHC) was ranked third in the latest USCHO.com National Poll released on Monday and fourth in the d3hockey.com rankings.
The Cadets will head out on the road for the first time on Friday when they travel o Skidmore for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Thoroughbreds in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. NU will then travel to Geneva, N.Y. for its first-ever league meeting with Hobart at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
