MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Norwich University men's ice hockey team swept the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) weekly awards for Week 3 on Monday afternoon.
Seniors Kevin Salvucci (Plymouth, Mass.) and Braeden Ostepchuk (Lethbridge, Alberta) earned the co-Player and co-Goalie of the Week awards respectively, while freshman Coby Downs (Montclair, Calif.) claimed Rookie of the Week honors for the second straight week.
Salvucci earned NEHC Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career after scoring two goals and notching two assists for four points to help lead the Cadets to a 1-0-1 record on the week.
Salvucci was all over the scoresheet in Friday's 4-0 win over Skidmore, scoring twice and tallying an assist to lead the Cadets to the victory. He also added an assist in Saturday's 2-2 tie vs. No. 6/10-nationally ranked Hobart. Salvucci is tied for the team lead with two goals and five assists for seven points.
Ostepchuk earned Goalie of the Week honors for the second time this season and fifth time overall after making 53 saves on 55 shots in two games. He picked up his second shutout of the season and 11th of his career with a 24-save performance vs. Skidmore on Friday night. He then made 29 saves in Saturday's 2-2 tie vs. Hobart.
Ostepchuk is 3-1-1 on the season with a 1.38 goals against average and a .948 save percentage to rank among the nation's leaders for goalies.
Downs earned his second straight Rookie of the Week award after scoring two goals and two assists for four points on the weekend.
He had a goal and two assists in Friday's 4-0 win over Skidmore and then he scored to put Norwich ahead 2-1 in Saturday's eventual 2-2 tie vs. Hobart.
Downs is tied with Salvucci for the team point lead with four goals and three assists for seven points through five games.
Norwich is ranked third in the latest d3hockey.com national ranking that was released on Monday. The Cadets are also fourth in the latest USCHO.com poll.
Norwich returns to action on Friday, Nov. 17 when it hosts New England College at 7 p.m. The Cadets then host Southern Maine at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The NU men's and women's hockey programs will also host their annual Alumni Weekends this weekend.
