Men’s Hockey: Norwich drops Middlebury, 5-1 in PrimeLink Consolation

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Norwich University men's ice hockey claimed third place in the 20th annual PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut with a 5-1 victory over the host Middlebury College Panthers on Saturday afternoon at the Chip Kenyon '85 Arena. 

Norwich (5-3-1, 4-1-1 NEHC) got goals from five different skaters led by a goal and an assist each from Jordan Hall (Anchorage, Alaska), Alec Brandrup (Rochester, Minn.) and Kale Kane (Kahnawake, Quebec). 

After battling to a 1-1 tie after the first period, Norwich scored four unanswered goals over the remainder of the game to continue its recent dominance over its long-time historic intrastate rival. The Cadets are now 10-1-3 in the last 14 meetings. Middlebury still holds an 80-64-9 lead in the all-time ledger. 

Sophomore Tom Aubrun (Chamonix, France) continued his strong start to the season, stopping 26 of 27 shots to improve to 2-0-0 in his collegiate career. 

Kane opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 9:05 mark of the first period for his second goal of the season off assists from Brandrup and Carter Cowlthorp (Boissevain, Manitoba). 

Middlebury (0-4-0, 0-2-0 NESCAC) tied the game up at the 14:38 mark of the first period with a goal by Michael Fahie. 

Norwich regained the lead for good though in the second period with Hall scoring the eventual game-winning goal at the 6:31 mark off assists from Jack Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) and Michael Korol (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). 

Sophomore Taeron Lewis (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored his first goal of the season off assists from Connor Evangelista (Wakefield, Mass.) and Christian Thompson (Windham, N.H.) at the 9:35 mark of the second period to make it 3-1 Norwich. 

Junior defenseman David Robertson (Boissevain, Manitoba) scored his first goal of the season with a slap shot from the point on the power play to make it 4-1 at the 13:32 mark of the second period. TJ Dockery (Lockport, N.Y.) and Kane picked up assists on the goal. 

Brandrup capped the scoring at the 14:17 mark of the third period with Hall picking up an assist at the 14:17 mark. 

Norwich outshot Middlebury 33-27 for the game and finished 2-for-5 on the power play. 

Norwich will travel to Castleton University on Friday, Dec. 1 for a 7 p.m. New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) contest at Spartan Arena. The Cadets will then host Castleton University on Friday, Dec. 8 at Kreitzberg Arena in the annual Teddy Bear Toss for Toys for Tots. Fans are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear to the game to toss on the ice.
