Men's Hockey: Norwich upsets No. 9 Hobart, 4-2

GENEVA, N.Y. - After not being able to solve Hobart during the 2017-18 season in four meetings, the Norwich University men's ice hockey team swept the Statesmen with a 4-2 victory on Friday night in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action at The Cooler.

Sophomore forward Coby Downs (Montclair, Calif.) scored twice, while Maxime Borduas (St. Cesaire, Quebec), Felix Brassard (St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec) and Brett Ouderkirk (Monkland, Ontario) each tallied two assists to lead the Norwich offense to the season sweep of the defending NEHC Tournament champions Hobart.

Junior goalie Tom Aubrun (Chamonix, France) made 34 saves to improve to to 6-3-2 on the season. 

Norwich (8-5-2, 5-4-0 NEHC) took advantage of Hobart being whistled for nine penalties and 21 minutes, scoring three times on the power play to surge to the victory. 

The Cadets scored their first three goals on the power play to build a 3-0 lead in the second period. Freshman defenseman Gabriel Chicoine (St. Dominique, Quebec) scored his second goal of the season at the 7:09 mark of the middle stanza off assists from Brassard and Ouderkirk. 

Just 1:17 later Norwich extended the lead to 2-0 with Downs scoring his first of the night off assists from Jake Erickson (Stillwater, Minn.) and Brassard. 

Downs made it 3-0 with 5-on-3 power play goal at the 15:56 mark of the second period off assists from Ouderkirk and Borduas. 

Hobart (11-5-0) finally got on the board at the 18:00 minute mark of the second period with Chase Bell cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Statesmen got an unassisted tally just 31 seconds into the third period to cut the Norwich lead to 3-2. 

Junior Jordan Hall (Anchorage, Alaska) scored his fourth goal of the season with an assist from Borduas at the 11:55 mark of the third period. 

Norwich got a much needed two points in the NEHC standings and will now face Skidmore on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Saratoga Springs Ice Arena in another NEHC matchup.
