NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sophomore Bo Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) registered five points, including four goals, to lead the Corsairs' men's lacrosse team to a 13-3 season-opening victory over visiting Norwich University this afternoon in a non-conference contest at Cressy Field.
UMass Dartmouth utilized a well-balanced attack as seven student-athletes cracked the scoring column. Senior Jordan MacPherson (Westwood, Mass.) recorded a hat trick and handed out an assist for four points, while classmate Todd Davis (Sandwich, Mass.) produced two markers and two helpers. Junior Riley Baxter (Groton, Mass.) contributed three points, while senior Adam Niden (Walpole, Mass.) and classmate Dennis Healy (Hanover, Mass.) completed the Corsairs' goal production.
The hosts charged out of the gates, scoring three markers in the opening frame. MacPherson gave UMass Dartmouth a lead they would not relinquish, putting home a feed from Niden at the 4:40 mark. Thirty seconds later, MacPherson set up Prozinski for his first goal of the season. The Corsairs capped the first quarter scoring at 14:57, when Baxter laced a frozen rope past the Cadet netminder.
Norwich was finally able to solve the UMass Dartmouth defense just 31 seconds into the second stanza, when sophomore Ryan McCarthy (Clark, N.J.) tallied the Cadets' first goal. The Corsairs quickly responded with a pair of markers less than a minute apart to open up a 5-1 lead. The visitors entered the halftime intermission with a 5-2 deficit after senior Patrick Tommins (Fairfield, Conn.) registered his first tally of the season.
UMass Dartmouth dominated the second half, outscoring its guest by an 8-1 margin. The Corsairs recorded seven unanswered markers, including all three goals in the third. MacPherson netted his second marker of the contest just three minutes after the intermission before Prozinski and Davis traded goals. UMass Dartmouth sealed its first win of the campaign with three of the final four markers of the contest.
Senior Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, Mass.) made eight saves to earn his first victory of the season, while classmate Mark Paradiso (Westford, Mass.) reached double digits in saves with 12 in the loss.
The Corsairs held a 36-20 advantage in shots and a 40-29 edge in groundballs. The hosts controlled the X, winning 12-of-19 restarts. Sophomore Dan Brown (Beverly, Mass.) won 8-of-10 faceoffs.
Norwich returns to action on Tuesday, March 4 when they host Curry College a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game.
