LEICESTER, Mass.- Becker College defeated Norwich University 9-8 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Tuesday evening at Alumni Field. The win propels the Hawks to their best start in program history at 7-1 (3-0 GNAC), while the Cadets fall to 1-6 (1-2 GNAC).
The Hawks got the scoring started with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter when John DeAngelis (Swampscott, Mass.) scored top shelf with a shot from ten yards out.
Norwich responded with 4:40 remaining in the opening quarter when Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) snuck from behind the Hawks net, tying the game at 1-1. The Cadets took the lead 1:12 later when Ryan McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) ripped a shot from five yards out. Norwich increased their lead to 3-1 when Michael Lavery (Penacook, N.H.) scored on an assist from Seth Fuller. Seth Fuller scored his second goal of the game as time expired in the first quarter when he gathered a loose ball in front of the Becker net, making the score 4-1.
Norwich added to their lead 5:18 into the second quarter when Ryan McCarthy fed Zachary McMillian (Brunswick, Maine) just outside the left post, giving the Cadets a commanding 5-1 lead.
The Hawks ended the Cadets scoring run with 7:10 remaining in the first half when David Deschenes (Gales Ferry, Conn.) found freshman Daniel Johnson (Plymouth, Mass.) for his 26th goal of the season. Becker cut their deficit to 5-3 when Dalton Carroll (Shrewsbury, Mass.) collected a rebound in front of the Norwich net and slipped it past goalie Mark Paradiso (Westford, Mass.) for his sixth goal of the season.
The Hawks cut the Norwich lead to one just 2:21 into the third quarter when Ryan Kearney (Katonah, N.Y.) found fed Dalton Carroll next to the left post. The Hawks tied the game at 5-5 when David Deschenes connected with Daniel Johnson with 10:25 remaining in the third quarter.
Norwich took a 6-5 lead with 5:54 remaining in the third quarter when Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, Md.) scored on a fast break with the helper coming from Joe DiTommaso (Hubbard, Ohio). Becker tied the game when Myles Mile (Norwalk, Conn.) assisted David Deschenes on his 26th goal of the season. The Hawks took the lead 21 seconds later when Daniel Johnson scored his third goal of the game, this one coming on a man advantage opportunity to give the Hawks a 7-6 lead at the end of three quarters.
Norwich tied the game 2:24 into the fourth quarter when Seth Fuller netted his third goal of the game on an assist from Mendoza. John DeAngleis broke the tie with 9:56 remaining in regulation when he bounced a shot into the Norwich net on man advantage chance to make the score 8-7 in favor of Becker. DeAngelis struck again with 8:08 left on the clock when he split the Cadet defense, scoring into the left corner of the net.
McCarthy cut the Norwich deficit to 9-8 when he scored from ten yards out on a man advantage chance with 5:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. Norwich had plenty of scoring opportunities in the final minutes, but Jeffrey Candee (Madison, Conn.) and the Hawks defense stood their ground to hold on for the 9-8 victory.
Becker goalie Jeffrey Candee made ten saves, while Paradiso turned away seven shots for the Cadets.
Norwich University returns to action on Thursday, March 27 when they travel to New England College for non-conference tilt beginning at 4:00 p.m.
