NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Head Coach Neal Anderson announced on Wednesday afternoon that seniors Cody Moore and Jake Giannelli will serve as co-captains for the 50th season of Norwich men's lacrosse in 2019.
"Both these young men are exceptional students and leaders both on and off the field," Coach Anderson stated, "Jake and Cody were starters on last year's senior-laden team and have proven they can execute in big moments.
Jake Giannelli (Norwich, Conn.) appeared in 18 games a year ago, starting nine. He scooped up 16 ground balls and caused six turnovers as a part of a Norwich defensive unit that finished first in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) in goals-against average (9.1) and third in caused turnovers (167). For his career, he's seen action in 31 games so far and will look to guide the Norwich defense to another successful year on the field.
Cody Moore (Canton, N.Y.) looks to be the driving force in the Cadets' 2019 offensive attack, after having a huge year for Norwich as a junior. Moore ranked fifth in the conference and second on the team in goals (41) and points (58) on his way to a First-Team All-GNAC selection. He appeared in every Norwich game and tallied a goal in all but two of those games during the season and notched his 100th career point during the GNAC Championship. Moore already sits in the top-ten in program history for career goals heading into his senior season with 71. A year ago Norwich ranked highly in the GNAC in goals (217, 1st), shots (812, 1st), and goals per game (11.42, 2nd), an effort Moore and the rest of the Cadets will look to build on heading into 2019.
Coach Anderson also cited Giannelli's already extensive and exemplary work in the military and Cody Moore's success in the classroom (including the award of the Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service from the Department of Defense) as off-the-field elements both men bring to the table as leaders.
The Cadets will start their season on February 23rd when they host Curry College at 1:00 PM. GNAC play will begin a week later when the Rivier Raiders come to town on March 2nd for a 4:00 PM start.
